Guin thought about turning around and heading back to Sanibel several times as she drove to the detective’s apartment, even as she pulled into the lot next to his building. Instead, she parked the Mini, took a look at her face in the mirror, got out, and jogged up the stairs to his front door. She rang the doorbell and waited. He opened it a minute later, dressed in a pair of old shorts and a t-shirt. He was older and shorter than Ris, and thicker set, more like a boxer than a triathlete (which Ris had been and probably still was). But Guin didn’t care. She practically threw herself at him, taking his head in her hands and kissing him.

He was momentarily surprised, then returned the kiss. A minute later, they were frantically making their way to the detective’s bedroom.
